Opening to Wisdom:
Practicing with the Five Hindrances
The Five Hindrances are original teachings from the time of the
Buddha, alerting us to ways that we weaken our innate wisdom.
Practicing with craving, ill will, dullness, restlessness, and
doubt, we can untie knots and release vital energies that can ripen
suffering into understanding and liberation.
During our time together, we will enjoy the silence and beauty of
Petit Jean Mountain. Each day includes sitting and walking
meditation, Dharma talks, mindful meals, yoga, and investigation of
the teachings through writing practice, led by Wendy, and Dharma
discussions. Private interview sessions with Therese will be
available.
Recommended for both beginning and experienced meditators, this
retreat will be conducted mostly in silence. Everyone must plan on
attending the entire retreat.
Therese Fitzgerald is co-founder of the Community of Mindful Living
in Berkeley, California, that developed Thich Nhat Hanh's teaching
and Vietnamese social work base in the United States, and, together
with Maxine Hong Kingston, started the veterans' writing and
mindfulness group. Therese was ordained as a Dharma teacher by Thich
Nhat Hanh in 1994. In 1999, she co-founded Dharma Friends and now
lives on Maui, where she works as a Dharma mentor and meditation
retreat leader and minister at Maui Community Correctional Center.
Wendy Johnson has been practicing Zen meditation since 1972 and is
ordained as a lay Dharma teacher by Thich Nhat Hanh and also Linda
Ruth Cutts of Green Gulch Farm Zen Center, where Wendy helped found
the organic gardening program. Wendy, author of Gardening at the
Dragon's Gate, serves as a mentor in Bay Area, California, school
gardening programs, including The Edible Schoolyard, and leads
environmental retreats nationwide.
Camp Mitchell is a profoundly beautiful and serene retreat center.
Its airy perch on a rocky bluff overlooking the Arkansas River
Valley provides breathtaking views and invigorating contact with

the midst of nature.

Generosity
Dana is the practice of generosity.
Dana is the practice of generosity. This practice helps
remind us of the fundamental “inter-being” nature of life. By
supporting our teachers we deepen our own experience on the path of
practice while helping them to support others.
A portion of the registration fee covers the travel expenses of the
teachers and makes it possible to give a modest honorarium to each.
These are people who generously give much of their time and energy
throughout the year to the cause of helping others through
listening, sharing, and teaching, often without financial reward.
There will be an opportunity to offer dana at the retreat as well as
with registration.
The scholarship fund allows those with limited resources to attend
the retreat. Your contribution to this fund is greatly appreciated.
